What about Angels?

The term itself implies that Angels are the messengers of GodOur Eastern Orthodox tradition of angels is like many things we do, inherited from the Temple practices of Judaism. There are Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Powers, Dominions, Principalities, Virtues, Archangels, and finally Angels listed amongst the bodiless powers. The six-winged seraphim get frequent mentions in our hymnography, and because of their closeness to God, resemble fire, and from which their name (meaning “flaming”) derives, i.e, they are aflame with their love for God and inspire us to be also. The cherubim are enlightened, their name meaning “great understanding” and are depicted on the Ark of the Covenant; their song is sung during the Liturgy of the Faithful as we “set aside all earthly cares.” Archangels are the heralds of Good News, and according to St. Gregory the Dialogist, strengthen people in the Holy Faith, enlightening our minds with the light of the knowledge of the Holy Gospel and revealing the mysteries of devout faith.
