Heresies. We hear a lot about them; obviously we want to avoid them, but to do so we must understand where they come from. The word itself derives from the Greek hereticos, which implies a choice is being made, i.e., these people are choosing to believe other than the Orthodox position. In many ways the Nicene Creed you read last week was a statement against heresies - we believe in ONE God, In ONE baptism, etc. - this is to correct heresies that suggested otherwise.

They’re not all dead, i.e., many have appeared again in various protestant teachings, and in groups like the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses.
